Ham radio operators have had the ability to send text messages and emails over the airwaves for over 20 years. Text messaging is not new. It is used for emergency communications, for alerts, and by ocean sailors, travelers and campers.

YARA uses APRS for position reporting and sending text messages and Winlink (HF) and D-Star (VHF & UHF) to send text messages and email attachments for emergency communications and community service. Some members enjoy the technologies for personal use.

Here are a few key options for HF, VHF and UHF radio communications.

Winlink

Winlink (Wikipedia) Winlink, also known as the Winlink 2000 Network, is a worldwide radio messaging system that mixes internet technology and appropriate amateur radio radio frequency (RF) technologies. The system provides radio interconnection services including: email with attachments, position reporting, graphic and text weather bulletins, emergency/disaster relief communications, and message relay.
